A good gathering is more than the sum of the people in the room. The room itself matters. The rhythm of the evening matters. The permission to slow down matters, and that permission is usually set by the host.
The mistake is treating a gathering as content — a schedule, a photo, a story told afterwards. The gatherings people carry with them are the ones that made space for the unplanned: a conversation that ran late, a walk after dinner, a quiet moment before the group re-formed.
